Bagels

I do not know what about you, but I love bagels. Bagels established also here as an American snacks, but actually they do not originate from the US. In fact they have a European-Jewish origin. The bagel was created in the 17th century and was brought by Jewish immigrants to America in the 19th century. Since then, the bagel is regarded a typical American sandwich. As I said, I love bagels. Unfortunately I do not know where to buy bagels. But I can help myself, because the bagel is not that hard to bake. And because I think that you might also like bagels, I will now share the basic recipe with you.

You need:

500 g flour
1 package (7g) dry yeast
1 ½ tsp sugar
1 ½ tsp salt
375 ml water, lukewarm

From this amount you will receive about 8 piece

This is how we proceed:

Mix flour with dry yeast, sugar and salt. Add water gradually while kneading. The dough should easily come off the bowl rim and should not be sticky. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit of flour. Sprinkle some flour over the dough and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

Bagels dough

Divide the dough into 8, shape each piece into a flattish ball and let rise for another 10 minutes.

shape dough to balls

Take a wooden spoon and use the floured handle to make a hole in the middle of each ball. Twirl the bagel around the handle to make a hole.

form bagles

Lay bagels on a baking tray lined with baking paper, leave enough space between the bagels, cover with a cloth and leave to rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 225 degrees.

Meanwhile, bring a large pan of water to a boil. Slip the bagels into the boiling water and cook for 30 seconds on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain away any excess water. Place on the baking tray lined with parchment and sprinkle with salt, sesame or poppy.

Bagels before baking

Bake for 25 Minutes.
